Your roadmap
Start Here
Five simple steps from "I'm curious" to "I'm at my first event." Take it at your own pace.
- 1
Learn the basics
Understand what combat robots are, common designs (wedges, spinners, hammers), and how matches work.
- 2
Choose a weight class
Antweight (1 lb) and Beetleweight (3 lb) are the most beginner-friendly. Start small to learn fast.
- 3
Pick a first robot path
Kit, modified kit, or fully custom — pick what matches your time, budget, and skills.
- 4
Learn safety
Weapon locks, test boxes, LiPo handling. This is non-negotiable before powering up.
- 5
Attend an event
Even before you build, visit a local event. You'll learn more in a day than weeks of reading.
Pick your path
Four tracks designed around how you want to participate.
Kit Builders
Want a guaranteed-working bot fast? Start with a proven kit — assemble, learn, then upgrade.
- •Lowest barrier to entry
- •Spare parts are easy to source
- •Great for first event in 1–2 weekends
Custom Builders
Comfortable with CAD or hand tools? Design something unique — expect a few iterations.
- •Learn CAD + fabrication
- •Iterate on real-match data
- •Higher ceiling, longer ramp
Spectators
Not ready to build? Come watch. Spectating is the best free education in the sport.
- •Free or low cost
- •Meet builders & ask questions
- •Decide what kind of bot you want
Parents Helping Kids
Supporting a kid into the hobby? Here's how to keep it safe, fun, and age-appropriate.
- •Antweight is ideal for youth
- •Adult supervises all power-on
- •Strong STEM learning
